Chapter Seventeen

My right eyelid risks the first hit of daylight as it opens, reluctant as a clamshell. My left eye follows. Hazy memories of drinking way too much wine crowd my brain, so I’m surprised that Thor’s hammer isn’t pulping my head into organic waste.

Eyes wide open now, I check myself over and actually, don’t feel too bad. No headache to speak of so that’s a relief. I snuggle back under the covers and that’s when I hear the cistern filling up.

Someone’s in my bathroom.

That someone is now knocking on my door. I hear their voice, but they sound muffled as my heavy duvet is squashed around my ears. Blood pumps through my veins faster than two cheetahs chasing the same prey.

They shake my shoulder and I hear Dev’s voice. “Letts, it’s me. I’ve brought you some water.”

For the second time this morning, I risk a peep. My heart lurches when I see him. “Jesus Christ, Dev,” I croak. “What are you doing here?”

“Long story. Here, drink this.”

Wearing a patient look on his face, he hovers over me. I fold the top of the quilt over and it exposes the top half of my body. I’m naked under my tank. More to the point, my nipples choose this moment to burst into life as the cool air chills my body. I have few choices. Cover up or pretend my nipples don’t exist and take the water.

The water wins because I’m dehydrated and I drink it so fast it dribbles down my chin and onto my chest. Ah, shit, can this get any better? Oh, yes it can, because I should’ve visited the bathroom before drinking the water and now I’m desperate. He looks on in amusement as I throw the covers off and bound over the bed.

In a hoarse voice, I croak, “Don’t go away,” and nip into the bathroom.

The relief is instant and as I rake around in my bathroom cupboard for a tampon, it’s then I realise I’m wearing the boy shorts I had on last night. To compound my misery, they’re not the kind you’d wear with a guy. Mine are striped. Chunky blue, red and yellow ones, to be more specific. The only thing they’ve got going for them is that they hug my butt cheeks tighter than a tiger’s stripes, so that’s something, I guess.

How ironic that I’ve filled two out of three drawers with lace and froth but I chose these. He’d probably prefer the black leather and PVC contents of my third drawer, but we’re not there yet. Until Dev, it’d been so long, I’d been thinking of contacting Beamish Museum to see if they wanted the contents for a period piece.

After washing my hands, I wander back to my bedroom. He’s sitting on the bed with his back against the headboard, resting his hands on raised knees.

“Damn. My head feels like it’s filled with cotton wool.”

Eyes flashing with amusement, he quirks his right eyebrow and smirks. What at, I couldn’t say. I left my sense of humour at the party and don’t expect a reunion any time soon.
